LOCATION
The Istanbul Food Workshop is situated
in one of the oldest and most intriguing parts of Istanbul;
on the shores of the Golden Horn where the villages
of Fener and Balat meet. The Tahtaminare Mosque,
built in the earliest days of the Ottoman Empire sits
immediately across the street. The Tuesday food
bazaar of Balat begins less than one hundred metres
down the road. Original bakeries of both bread and
biscuits are found metres away. Other landmarks of interest
in the immediate area include the Greek Orthodox Patriarch,
the Rum Boy's School, the Bulgarian Church and the Ahrida
Synagogue.
A few minutes ride east along the Golden Horn will bring
you to Eminonu and the Spice (Egyptian) Bazaar, trading
districts since the days of Byzantium. Along the side
of the Spice Bazaar you will still find a few of the fruit
and vegetable stores to invoke a memory of centuries gone
by. A time when the streets would have been brimming with
fresh produce stores packed with goods brought from the ships
docked at the water's edge.
